In the Toronto carpet cleaning area, the average person has a couple
of carpets at home but has never given the origin of the carpet a second
thought. It is rumored that carpets originated from the ancient Middle East due
to what most television programs and childhood cartoons continue to display.
Although many people believe carpets are an Arabic creation, it is not so. Most
historians believe that the carpet originated in Central Asia. The theory is
that hides and furs of animals were used as barriers from the cold and cold
surfaces and that slowly evolved into the carpet. As technology advanced,
carpets become more and more intricate and are now mass produced and consumed
by everyone. In 1960, a carpet was discovered in Mongolia, and is now known as
the first knotted rug that we have on record. The woven rug was about 5×6 feet
and was made around 464 B.C. It had many similarities with Persian and
Anatolian carpets. There are plenty of different sources that claim to have the
oldest carpet on Earth. A museum in Russia has a carpet that was discovered in
Serbia from around 400 B.C. It is known that many wealthy families started
decorating their homes with high quality carpets as designs became more and
more interesting and elaborate. One of the most famous carpets today is known
as the Ardebil carpet. This carpet was made for King Shah Tahmasp of Persia and
is now on display at the Victoria and Albert museum in England. It is
considered by the Toronto carpet cleaning professionals as a priceless piece of
art. This carpet is about 17×34 feet in size and has an unbelievable amount of
over 32 million woven knots. Carpet spread from Central Asia to Persia, and as
world trade started to kick off, the carpet ended up in all corners of the
world. From India to Europe, carpets became commonplace and we now benefit from
them today. Carpet factories opened in France in the 1500’s under Louis XII and
in 1655, construction worked started to build one of the first carpet factories
in Wilton, England. Although carpets began in Europe, the carpets from the Middle
East were always seen to have the best quality. Up until the 1950’s carpets
were produced as they had always traditionally been made. Then, the Americans
had created a new type of carpet referred to as tufted carpet. Tufted carpet
was created by a young woman who was trying to create a different kind of bed
cover in the early 1900’s in Dalton, Georgia. In the local area, the bed cover
industry exploded and it helped the Dalton area survive the great depression.
Today, Dalton Georgia is actually considered the carpet capital of the world
which is surprising to most professionals in the carpet industry considering
the history of the how the carpet came to be. The carpet industry continued to
grow in Dalton Georgia and eventually the production of tuft carpet became
mechanized. Until the 1950’s tuft carpet still had not surpassed the woven
carpet. Only 10% of all carpets produced were using the modern tufted style.
With the advent of synthetic fibers, about 90% of the world’s carpets are made
in the tufted carpet style while only about 2% of carpets are now produced
using the classic woven style that was seen in the past. Like most things in
the world, carpet will continue to evolve to suit the needs of the people in
the Greater Toronto Area. Who knows how the next generation of carpets will
look, what they will be made out of and how we will use them. Nonetheless,
carpets continue to tell us a little bit about our history as human beings and,
are still very beneficial to this day. Some real estate agents in the Toronto
area prefer to sell homes that have high quality carpet installed in most
rooms, as this is something many home owners are known to search for.
